Located at the eastern edge of the city, Agios Athanasios is the third oldest church in Kavala. it was built between 1878-1888 with expenses covered by parishioners. It is a three-aisled basilica, while the narthex was built later.
It is believed that the space below the church's sanctuary used to be a hideout and a depot for weapons storage during the Macedonian struggle. The church's iconostasis is of significant height and consists of portable icons as well as smaller ones - mainly of Cretan and Renaissance artistic styles.
The church celebrates on January 18th and May 2nd.
