Elos lagoon is located about 3 kilometers south of the asphalt road that connects Fanari with Imeros. It is part of the National Park of Nestos Delta and the lakes Vistonida and Ismarida. It is a very shallow lagoon, almost connected with the nearby Ptelea lagoon, giving thus the impression that the two lakes are part of a complex of coastal brackish and freshwater lakes. At the point where the lagoon stretches to the sea, and next to the sandy beach, there are impressive sand dunes. Elos lagoon is an ecosystem that features diverse habitats, such as canals and islets, salt marshes, muddy areas, estuaries, wetlands, beaches with sandy dunes, and rocky wet meadows.
Like all the other lagoons in the area, Elos is a Ramsar Protected Area, Wildlife Refuge, Special Protected Area, included in the Natura 2000 network. It is a habitat for many plants, but also many species of birds and fish. In winter, hundreds of species of migratory birds find shelter in the lake.
At the end of the beach, on the peninsula of Molyvoti and cape Kalogiros, the small church of Agii Apostoli is a landmark with astonishing views over the coastline of Rodopi. To the southeast of the lagoon, there are the ruins of ancient Strymi, a colony of Thassos, which was destroyed by Philip II.
From here, the route leads from the east to the west to all the lagoons of Rodopi.
