Village near Didymoteicho. Its inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and livestock breeding. It was named after the fact that, until the 1960s, top quality lime (“asvestis” in Greek) used to be extracted from the nearby Aglia hill.
The inhabitants of the village and 12 other villages in the area belong to the family of Maris, who express themselves musically with fast and lively tunes. This was a characteristic that later prevailed in Western Thrace forming the “West Thracian expression”.
