The burning of Tzaros is a custom followed every year in Xanthi as part of the carnival events. The custom was brought to Xanthi by refugees from Samakovo in Eastern Thrace.
Tzaros or Tzarous was a model of a man placed in a pile of wood. On the last Sunday of the Carnival, they burned it in the center of a square or on the hills so that they would not have fleas in the summer. Nowadays, the event takes place every year near the bridge of Kosynthos river. The name Tzaros came from the peculiar sound created by the burning of the bush (tz, tz, tz…).
