The looted tomb at Symbola
Next to the village of Symbola, there is a Macedonian-type tomb dating to the late 4th - early 3rd c. BC. Unfortunately, only a few findings have come to light as it had been looted in antiquity as well as in modern times. Furthermore, the excavation of the tomb by the archeological service was carried out only after an attempt of illegal excavation in 1976. The tomb is underground, built with limestone and cobblestones from the nearby torrent. Initially, it had an above-ground mound of soil, which is not preserved today, due to many years of agricultural work. It consists of three parts, the street, the vestibule and the main chamber which were separated by double-leaf marble doors. The floor is also made of cobblestones covered with white mortar and limestone tiles. The walls were decorated with painted mortars and embossed ribbons.
The monument can be visited after contact with the Ephorate of Antiquities. Visitors should go by their own means from Komotini to the village of Symbola. Access for the disabled is possible to the monument but there is no supporting means to enter the tomb.
