Travel back in time to the mythical Rodopi
The Archaeological Museum of Komotini houses exhibits from various parts of Thrace, both from prehistoric sites and from sanctuaries, settlements, mainly of the Roman period and cemeteries. You will see findings from the Cave of Maronia, Mesi, Xylagani, Zone and the archeological site of Maroneia. The gold bust of the Leucius Septimius Severus Augustus is of particular interest. Ηe was Roman emperor from 193 to 211 AD. The bust, 25 cm high and weighing 1 kg, made of 24 carat gold, served as the emblem of the Roman emperor in Plotinopolis.
The building where the Museum is housed is the work of the architect Aris Konstantinidis and was completed in 1970. It presents interesting elements of modern architecture.
