A town in the regional unit of Xanthi, built near the river Kydoneas, a tributary of the Kosynthos River. It consists of two districts - "mahalades" - separated by the river. The residents are Christians and Muslims. On the eastern side, refugees from Asia Minor and Eastern Thrace settled.

In close proximity, you can find the University Campus of the Polytechnic School of the Democritus University of Thrace.

The patron saint is Saint Demetrius the Myrovlites, while the place of worship for Muslims is the mosque. North of the settlement, you can find the ancient fortress of Kimmeria, the Acropolis of the Kimmeria or Kale.
