The European hare (lat. Lepus europaeus), also known as the brown hare, is a herbivorous mammal that is native to Europe and parts of Asia. It feeds mainly on grasses, herbs, and crops. It is among the largest hare species and is adapted to temperate, open country. Generally nocturnal and shy in nature, as well as notorious high-speed endurance runners to escape predation, European hares are difficult to observe in nature.
