The European shag (lat. Gulosus aristotelis) is an aquatic bird that is endemic in the coastal areas of Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Its scientific name aristotelis is a tribute to the ancient philosopher Aristotle.
The European shag resembles the cormorant but is smaller in size: its body length ranging between seventy and seventy-five centimeters, and a wingspan of about one meter. Its most distinctive features, however, are the black plumage with shades of gray or silver, its long and slender yellow beak, and the relatively long tail.
Being typically an epidemic species, the European shag winters in its breeding range nesting on rocky ledges or in crevices or small caves. It feeds mainly on fish and seafood.
