Metaxades

This traditional picturesque village of the regional unit of Evros is known for its stone architecture. It is 3 km away from the Greek-Bulgarian border and owes its name to the involvement of its inhabitants with sericulture. The post-Byzantine church of Agios Athanasios, built in 1695, is an important attraction of the village. During the Greek Civil War (1946-1949), the Battle of Metaxades took place in the area.
