It is in Krinides of Kavala, near the ancient city of Philippi. It is a modern monument, inspired by the presence of St Paul in the area.
Lydia, from Thyateira in Asia Minor, was the first Greek and the first European woman to be baptized along with her family in Zygaktis river by Paul. In memory of this event, the church-baptistery was built in 1974.
The baptistery is in the shape of an octagon. In the center is the marble bottle where infant baptisms are performed. On both sides there are locker rooms for adult baptisms. Inside there are many works of art, mosaics, icons, etc.
According to tradition, the baptism of Lydia took place on the riverbank. At that spot, there is an outdoor baptistery, in the shape of a cross. Here, every year, on May 20, adult baptisms take place.
