The castle-fortress is on the top of peninsula of Panagia in Kavala and is a point-symbol of the city. It was built at the beginning of the 15th century, after the Byzantine Acropolis of Christoupolis (former name of Kavala). It has many interventions in its fortification by the Byzantines, the Venetians and the Ottomans. It consists of the central circular tower with a unique view of the city, the ammunition and food storage, the outpost and the water tank. Nowadays, in a part of the Acropolis takes place cultural events.
