Early Christian basilica (Maroneia)

The early Christian and Byzantine Maroneia

Τhe early Christian basilica with the mosaics preserved in fragments but in good condition. This basilica in Paleochora with some modifications was in use throughout the inhabitance of the area. A neighboring mansion, which probably belonged to an official, is of particular interest as well as a nave with a characteristic brick-enclosed masonry. In the houses of the mid-Byzantine period, the various parts of the house and the auxiliary spaces can be distinguished, such as hearths, tanks, vaulted oven, benches, etc.

Maroneia of the Byzantine period occupies only a part of the ancient city, towards the ancient port. Its prosperity in the pre-Christian years continued as it is evident by the archeological finds and written sources. From the 9th to the 13th century, it was inhabited continuously, based on the pottery and coins found in the excavations.

Maroneia was an important religious, agricultural and commercial center. The city was naturally protected from the neighboring ditch of the stream but also artificially as it was walled with 2 km long walls and four-sided towers.
