Heroides 18.1-6

Original

Mittit Abydenus, quam mallet ferre, salutem,
     si cadat unda maris, Sesti puella, tibi.
si mihi di faciles si sunt in amore secundi,
     invitis oculis haec mea verba leges.
sed non sunt faciles; nam cur mea vota morantur
   currere me nota nec patiuntur aqua?

Translation in Greek

Κορίτσι της Σηστού, ο νέος από την Άβυδο σου στέλνει τους χαιρετισμούς του, τους οποίους θα προτιμούσε να φέρει ο ίδιος αν τα κύματα της θάλασσας υποχωρούσαν. Αν οι θεοί είναι φιλικοί μαζί μου και ευνοϊκοί στην αγάπη μου, θα διαβάσεις αυτά τα λόγια με αδιάφορα μάτια. Αλλά δεν είναι φιλικοί. Αλλιώς γιατί οι επιθυμίες μου καθυστερούν και δεν ανέχονται να τρέξω πάλι στα νερά;

Translation in English

From one of Abydos, greetings, girl of Sestos, which he’d prefer to bring to you, if only the waves would abate. If the fates are good to me, if the gods accompany me with love, you’ll read these words with indifferent eyes. But the fates aren’t kind: why now would they delay my pledge, not allowing me to hurry to you through familiar waters?
