The Eurasian otter (lat. Lutra lutra) also known as European otter, Eurasian river otter, common otter, or Old World otter, is a semi-aquatic mammal that is native to Europe and Asia. It lives on the banks of mountain rivers and lakes, in swamps with dense riparian vegetation, as well as in coastal areas that have access, however, to freshwater, which is necessary to clean its fur. Otters have a preference for very clear waters.
The otter swims fast, wagging its tail and body and using its hind legs as oars. On land, it walks with difficulty and stands short, using its tail as a support.
Today, the Eurasian otter is considered an endangered species and is protected by national, European, and international law.
