Byzantine scholar and cleric (c. 1115-c. 1195/6). Well schooled in Ancient Greek literature and a teacher of rhetoric in Constantinople, he became Bishop of Thessalonica around 1178 and served the Church in this position until his death. He wrote commentaries on ancient poets, theological treatises, homilies, letters, encomia, funeral orations, and a history of the fall of Thessalonica to the Sicilians in 1185. His commentaries on the Iliad and the Odyssey represent a major contribution to Homeric studies, not only for the author’s astute observations but also because they preserve valuable material from ancient grammarians.
