The Return of Orestes from Phocis

Oil on canvas with the return of Orestes from Phocis, Anton von Maron (1786)

An 18th-century oil on canvas painting depicts Orestes' return to his home. After his father's murder, Orestes took refuge in Strophios, the king of Phocis, at the urging of his sister Electra. He comes back at Apollo's request in order to get revenge for Agamemnon's demise. To trap Klytaimnestra and slay both her and Aegisthus, he appears to her with the alleged ashes of the deceased Orestes.
