Rooted in the Dionysian cult since the god Dionysus was especially worshiped in the area, babougera is an ancient custom that is celebrated on the day of the Epiphany in many areas of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Men in disguise wearing animal skins, carrying heavy bells, and with their faces colored black using smoke or soot, sing and dance to exorcise evil spirits.
