Town in the regional unit of Evros which connects Soufli with Didymoteicho. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, the inhabitants raised lavara (meaning "banners") decorated with crosses and pushed back the Ottoman army. In memory of this event, they built the church of Agios Athanasios, and the town was named after those lavara. The history of the city dates to the 7th century AD. Water tanks of that era were found in the area.
