Nikisiani

Located on the borders of the regional units of Kavala and Serres, Nikisiani is a town named after ancient Nike. Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture and livestock farming. The region is known for its exquisite marble (Ajax).

The central church of the town is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary to the Temple. The chapel of St. George is also notable; here the departure of the livestock breeders from the winter pastures is celebrated. There are three monasteries in the area: Saint Demetrius, Saint Ioannis, and Axion Esti, as well as the historic Monastery of Virgin Eikosifoinissa.

Every year during the Feast of Epiphany or Saint Ioannis' Day, the custom of the Arapides is revived in Nikisiani. The tradition dates back to antiquity, as it is believed that the peaks of Mount Pangaio were the residence and oracle of the god Dionysus.
