Η μυθική μορφή του Ορφέα, μόνη ή μαζί με την Ευρυδίκη,  απασχόλησε τον Εγγονόπουλο σε πολυάριθμες παραλλαγές ήδη από τη δεκαετία του 1930. Μάλιστα έγραψε και ποίημα, ειδικά αφιερωμένο στο μουσικό, με τίτλο "Ο Ορφεύς".
