Orpheus leads Eurydice out of the Underworld

Oil on canvas with Orpheus leading Eurydice from the Underworld, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1861)

An oil painting by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot depicts the return of Eurydice from the Underworld. Orpheus, having reached an agreement with Hades on the terms of Eurydice's return to life, leads her to the earth with her gaze directed only forward. He holds the lyre in his left hand, the melody of which persuaded Hades and Persephone. The dead of the Underworld can be seen as shadows in the background.
