The bronze handle of a knife used to groom the horse's hooves is adorned with an Orpheus relief. The musician plays the lyre and holds the plektron in his right hand. He is surrounded by wild animals that he is taming through his music.
Until its identification was revised, this handle decoration was thought to be an ancient statuette. The cardinal and art collector Scipione Borghese (1576-1633) was most likely the first owner, and later the royal Prussian war advisor Friedemann Heinrich Christian Ludwig Schelhaß von Schellersheim (1752-1836). It came into the possession of the Antikensammlung in 1827.
