Hero and Leander

Turner's painting depicts the farewell of Hero and Leander, before the latter's departure for Abydos. The couple is hidden under the shadow of the steep rocks at the edge of the water. A winged Eros stands above them on the terrace, holding a lamp and a torch. On the left, Sestos' buildings appear in the background, painted according to classical architectural standards, while the jagged rocks of the beach are on the right.
