Town in the plain of Xanthi. It was famous for its tobacco, which led to its great economic growth during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was the capital of the prefecture till the end of the 19th century when it was destroyed by a fire, which is perceived to be the result of an arson set by an Ottoman lord.
Many of the town buildings are listed monuments, such as the building of the Greek Telecommunications Organization, and the Cultural Center of the Municipality (Georgios Chialis Mansion). The mosque, one of the oldest in the area, is also remarkable. Today, Genisea is a mosaic of cultures.
