On a draft by the Italian mannerist painter Francesco Primaticcio, one of the most significant artists of the French royal court an episode of the Odyssey is preserved; Odysseus and his companions are fighting the Cicones before the Thracian city of Ismaros. On red-washed paper, the drawing was done in red chalk highlighted with white gouache. It is a study for a fresco that formerly decorated the Fontainebleau palace, but has since been destroyed. Odysseus is seen atop a chariot, using his spear to attack a Cicon outside the fortified city of Ismaros. Odysseus' armed companions are fighting alongside him against the Cicones warriors, several of whom lie dead on the ground.
