The painting depicts the return of Demophon to Thrace and his encounter with Phyllis, who has been transformed into an almond tree after her suicide. It must have preceded the embrace of Demophon with the tree, who still has his hands open and is staring at it in wonder. According to myth, Phyllis blossomed as a token of her love the moment she beheld Demophon.

Sketchbook | Waterhouse, John William | Victoria & Albert Collections (vam.ac.uk)
