In one of the miniatures of the 15th century manuscript devoted to the "Heroides" of Ovidius, translated into French by Octavien de Saint-Gelais, Demophon is depicted abandoning Phyllis. Demophon's ship is departing for Athens on the right. On the left, four female servants support Phyllis, who came down to the shore to farewell Demophon. Behind them, there is a fortified city that appears to be the Thracian capital Phyllis' father's kingdom. In terms of morphology, clothing and scenography the miniature refers to the Middle Ages, when the manuscript was created.
The "Heroides" is one of the early works of the Latin poet Ovidius (25–16 BC). It includes 21 love letters written by Greek and Roman mythological women and men to their loved ones.
