A seated statue of the god Ares. The god is depicted naked, sitting on a rock. To his left rests a shield. He holds his left leg with both hands, which rests on an Attic-type helmet. In his left hand, he holds his sword and himation. A small winged Eros can be seen between his legs.

It is a statue of Roman times that probably copies an original Greek work by the sculptor Scopas or Lysippus that dates to the 4th century BC. It was erected in the temple of Mars on the Campus Martius in Rome in 132 BC. In 1622, it was discovered and passed into the collection of Cardinal Ludovisi. Αccording to the famous archeologist Winckelmann, it was then that the winged Eros was added by Bernini, a great sculptor of the Baroque era. Winclemann believed that it was the most beautiful statue of Ares that had survived from antiquity. The Italian state bought it in 1901, and since then it has been exhibited in the National Museum in Rome.
