On the east frieze of the Parthenon, the Olympian gods are depicted watching the Panathenaic procession, which was the most important festival in ancient Athens, dedicated to the goddess Athena, and took place every four years. Ares, the god of war, stands out among them. He is seated on a diphros (a wooden stool without a back) and cradles one knee in his clasped hands, while the other leg rests on a spear, part of which is preserved beneath the ankle. The rest must have been painted in. He is naked. Only his discarded himation covers the lower part of his body. To the left, Demeter, Dionysus, and Hermes are seated on diphroi too.
