Acropolis of Petrota
Above the settlement of Petrota, on the hill where the chapel of Agios Georgios is built, the ruins of a fortification dating back to the Byzantine period are preserved. This location was chosen as it is difficult to access the hill from all sides except the north. Two circular towers were constructed at that point, reinforcing the defense of the fortress.
Its relatively crude construction and size lead to the conclusions that it was built in the 6th or 7th century to protect the inhabitants from enemy attacks.
Traces of Neolithic occupation have also been found at the site, around the 4th millennium BC. Evidence that the naturally fortified site had been appreciated since the prehistoric period.
