Agios Nikolaos (Alexandroupolis)

Metropolitan and cathedral temple in the center of Alexandroupolis, in Metropolis square. It construction started in 1892 by architects and craftsmen who came from Constantinople with donations made by the inhabitants and was inaugurated in 1901.

The history of the city is intertwined with that of the temple. The stone church is cruciform with a dome and two bell towers. The marble iconostasis is the same as the iconostasis of the Holy Trinity Church at Stavrodromi in Constantinople.

In the church are kept the wood-carved icon of Mary of Trifotissa of 13th century from Ainos, the icon of Mary Mavroforousa (wearing black), brought by refugees from Eastern Thrace, a piece of the relic of the patron saint of the city Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas) and other relics.
