The church was built in 1839, the date indicated on the inscriptions of the church. It belongs to the type of the three-aisled basilica. The central nave is dedicated to the birth of Ioannis (John the Baptist), patron saint of Xanthi, the southern nave to St. George and the northern nave to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. The church celebrates on 24 June and 29 August, the days of his birth and the cutting off of his head, respectively.
