The 3rd Alexandroupolis Elementary School "Angelos Poimenidis" is housed in a historic building in 34-38 Paleologou st. among the oldest buildings in the city. The exact date of its construction is not clear, although the most probable year of construction is estimated at 1866.
The Greek Community School at that time of its construction had about 100-200 students, both boys and girls. Between 1901 and 1909, the school housed the Urban School for Boys, while in the years that followed, the Leontarides Greek School was built, when the 3rd Elementary School was transformed into a girls' school. The school became known for the innovative pedagogical methods it applied from time to time. For this reason it was considered a model school.
The school has been characterized by the state as a building "in need of special state protection". In 2020, by decision of the Ministry of Education, it was named "Angelos Poimenidis" from the name of the writer and old teacher of the 3rd Elementary School.
