Αυτόν που μάταια παρακαλούσε και που για δεύτερη φορά ήθελε να περάσει, ο πορθμέας τον εμποδίζει. Κι εκείνος κάθεται για επτά μέρες βρωμερός σε μια όχθη και δεν βάζει στο στόμα του τα δώρα της Δήμητρας: η έγνοια, ο πόνος της ψυχής και τα δάκρυα ήταν η τροφή του. Παραπονιέται πως είναι σκληροί οι θεοί του Ερέβους και αποσύρεται στην ορεινή Ροδόπη και τον Αίμο που τον χτυπούν οι βοριάδες.

Orpheus wished and prayed, in vain, to cross the Styx again, but the ferryman fended him off. Still, for seven days, he sat there by the shore, neglecting himself and not taking nourishment. Sorrow, troubled thought, and tears were his food. He took himself to lofty Mount Rhodope, and Haemus, swept by the winds, complaining that the gods of Erebus were cruel.
