Armenian church, dedicated to Agios Grigorios (St Gregory). It was inaugurated in 1834 in Komotini, in Armenio (west of the current City Hall), because the Armenian community of the city lived there. The church was built with donations made by Armenian merchants from Edirne and Odessa. The founding inscription shows the year of its construction and how much it cost.
The courtyard was at first fenced with a high wall. Later, the bell tower was added. The church took its current form after a radical renovation. Nevertheless, the Armenian Church is considered one of the oldest buildings in the city.
Although it bears the name of Agios Grigorios, it celebrates the second Sunday of December, in honor of Saint Jacob, since Armenians consider him the savior of the city who protected it when a plague broke out.
