Hero and Leander

Fresco from the House of the Vettii in Pompeii with Hero and Leander, 45-79 AD

On a wall of the peristyle (inner court surrounded by a colonnade) in the luxurious House of Vettii, the myth of Hero and Leander is depicted. In the center, Leander is swimming across the Hellespont, from Abydos to Sestos, to visit his beloved Hero. She waits for him in her tower, lighting his way with a lamp. On the left, Leander's servant is sitting on the rocks of Abydos, holding the clothes and lighting the way for his master with a lantern. Three dolphins accompany Leander.
