Hero and Leander

Fresco from a tomb at Morlupo in Rome with Hero and Leander, 30 BC

The myth of Hero and Leander is depicted on the crescent-shaped wall of the burial chamber found at Morlupo in the vicinity of Rome. In the center, Leander is swimming across the Hellespont from Abydos to Sestos to visit his beloved Hero. She stands at the top of a tower, waiting for him and showing him the way with the aid of a lamp. To the right of the tower, inside the portico, there are three more human figures.
