Hero and Leander

On the reverse of a bronze coin dated to the time of the Roman emperor Severus Alexander (222-235 A.D.), Leander is depicted swimming in the sea, heading towards a tower, where Hero is waiting for him, lighting his way with a lamp. To the left, Leander’s himation and sword can be seen, which he left behind to be able to cross the Hellespont. Above the two figures, a winged Eros flies, holding a torch. The ethnic name of the citizen of Abydos (ΑΒΥΔΗΝΩΝ) is written around the scene.

On the obverse, the portrait of the emperor Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander is depicted. There is also an inscription with his name (IMP CI M VIP SEV ALEXANDRO AVG). However, there is an error in the inscription. Instead of the abbreviation AVR (=Aurelius) the engraver omitted A, added I and used the Greek P istead of the Latin R. Mistakes like that proove that Latin was not the customary language of the administration in Roman Abydos.
