The church was founded by refugees who settled here in 1922 from Eastern Thrace. In its place there was a Muslim mosque. Over the years for the needs of the parish, a nave was built on the right side of the church and served as a chapel dedicated to the Taxiarches. In 1983 the old church was demolished and, in its place, in 1985, a new one was consecrated in the type of a three-aisled basilica with a dome.
