The church is in the central square of Drama and was formerly known as the Eski Mosque.
During the Bulgarian occupation (1916-1918), the minaret was demolished and the mosque was turned into a church dedicated to Agios Georgios (St. George).
However, after the exchange of populations and the arrival of refugees, it was dedicated to Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas). Subsequently, the features of Muslim architecture were eliminated, and two bell towers and the niche of the sanctuary were added. The church was renovated and decorated with icons in 1991.
