The abduction of Oreithyia by Boreas

Attic red-figure hydria by the Painter of Pan depicting the abduction of Oreithyia by Boreas, 470 BC

A bearded winged Boreas is depicted on hydria’s shoulder, wearing short chitoniskos. He is grabbing with both hands Oreithyia as she seeks refuge at an altar. The woman is startled by the man's violent act and turns her head towards him with a frightened gaze, whereas she has already raised her other arm in a help-seeking gesture. The tension of the scene is reflected in the movement of the man’s himation and the impressive flowing garments of the maiden, as well as her hair which has been pulled back and tied into a lampadion (plait) blowing backwards.
