This tower took its name from the alternation of stone and bricks, which is characteristic of Byzantine masonry. As can be seen even today, the stonework is alternated by five zones of bricks.
The structure belonged to the outer wall of the city, which is not preserved. It was built during the Byzantine period, probably between the 12th and 13th centuries, in order to reinforce the north-western end of the Castle of Didymoteicho and to supervise this part of Erythropotamos river, which nowadays has no more water. Access to and from the castle was via a suspension bridge. At the point there was a gateway to the city.
