The Epiphany, which is also known as "Fota" (lights), is celebrated in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (as well as in the rest of Greece) on 6 January. The celebration commemorates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. After church, the people go next to the sea, a river, a lake, etc., in which the priest throws a large cross. The most daring jump into the water to catch the cross. Whoever succeeds is considered blessed for the whole year.
