The common pied oystercatcher (lat. Haematopus ostralegus), also known as the Eurasian or Palaearctic oystercatcher, or just oystercatcher, is a wader that is widespread all over Eurasia. With its reddish legs and its characteristic strong, broad, red bills used for smashing open mollusks such as mussels, this noisy bird is one of the most recognizable species.
In Greece, it is either a permanent epidemic bird, nesting in the north and central country, or, more commonly, a winter visitor wintering in coastal areas.
