Village in Rodopi, known since the Homeric times as it was the homeland of Maron, priest of Apollo, but also a place of cultivation of olive trees and grapevines. According to mythology, Odysseus intoxicated Cyclops Polyphemus with Maronite wine. Maroneia was also an important Greek colony on the coast of Western Thrace.
Sights include the ancient theater, Marmaritsa beach with the ancient marble quarry, the archeological site of Synaxi, and the cave of Maroneia.
