The Classical Era Castle of Aeriko near Myrtoussa
On the hill “Frourio” or “Kales”, at an altitude of about 600m, the ruins of a Classical period castle are preserved. It was built around 340 BC to control the valley of Nestos. The perimeter of the walls must have been about 200 m and their thickness varies from 1,50 m to 2,50 m. The original height was more than 4 m. The walls follow the irregular rectangular wall system. Although no archeological excavations have been carried out in the castle, it is certain that its use continued during the Byzantine period.
It is worth a visit if you are a hiking enthusiast and if you have a four-wheel drive vehicle.
