Hamidie bridge

The bridge of Sultan Hamid

The bridge was built in 1904 by Sultan Abdul Hamid. It is located at the 4th km of Xanthi-Stavroupolis.

It is made of white carved stone on the Kosynthos river. At the bases of the middle piers there are semi-circular projections i.e. water breakers to stop the high pressure from the water on the middle piers. On the drums there are marble reliefs with Ottoman symbols and inscriptions that have been destroyed. Originally it had four arches but during World War II the northern part was blown up.

The length of the bridge was 63 m and the width of the roadway was 3 m. The arches are 7 m high and 10.30 m wide.
