The landmark of the city
The Lighthouse of Alexandroupolis was built in 1850 by the French Company of Mediterranean Lighthouses. However, the year of first launching is 1880.
It is a cylindrical, stone-built lighthouse with accommodation for the lighthouse keepers. It is 17 m high and has a range of 24 nautical miles. Externally it has six windows to light the staircase with 98 steps leading to the lantern chamber. It was originally operated with acetylene, after World War II with petroleum and since 1974 with electricity. Since 2002 it has been equipped with a new technology system.
At the entrance, a marble inscription from the Society of the Friends of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage of Evros informs about the characteristics of the lighthouse.
It has been proclaimed a modern monument to be preserved. It is the trademark of Alexandroupolis.
