Metropolitan Church of Agios Athanasios

The metropolis of Didymoteichon

The metropolitan church of Agios Athanasios in the castle was renovated in 1834 as we can see from the marble inscription at the entrance. It is a three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica. The church is built on a church of the Palaeologan era, mid 13th - mid 15th century. Next to the northern wall of the church, the ruins of a monastery can be seen.

Interesting is the carved wooden iconostasis with icons of saints and monochrome landscape paintings in the lower zone.
